Flashback

Flashback So, being an incoming frosh, theres really not much I can talk about. Unless you consider all of those 500 forms I needed to fill out and send in to MIT. So I thought, why not share my thoughts on some of the less boring ones? Todays topic is housing, because its raining out and housing is the most fun topic. I was so, so excited to get the i3 video. i3 stands for Interactive Introduction to the Institute, and it showcases videos a few minutes in length about each of the dorms so that the incoming freshmen can make a more educated choice about where they want to live. Of course, most of the videos are nothing more than 5 minutes of someone with a video camera running through the halls, someone with a video camera following someone dressed in a monkey suit running through the halls, or people stuffing themselves into dryers in the laundry room. After each video you usually have a headache and a few disjointed snapshot images in your mind about what some of the rooms look like (which will become all jumbled in your mind with images from the other dorms anyway), but its all good fun. If youre dying to see these videos, some residences will host the video on their individual homepages. Im here all year, by the way Moving on) So I filled out the Freshman Housing Lottery like this: I tied Baker and Burton-Conner for first and listed New House as my third choice. After that I barely even remember. I know Id be happy in any of those 3, so itll all work out okay. In fact, during CPW (thats Campus Preview Weekend, MITs admitted students event) I filled out some survey that came in one of the many folders and envelopes I collected during my stay. The results told me that Id be happy pretty much anywhere- East Campus or West Campus. Heres the difference: West Campus dorms can be considered more traditional in terms of college atmosphere. There are lots of parties, dances, and social events. East Campus dorms (keep in mind there is also a residence hall called East Campus, which is a specific dorm which falls under the umbrella category of East Campus dorms) are more diverse and unconventional. Residents in this part of campus tend to fit more easily into the stereotypical MIT student mold. Basically, West Campus mocks East Campus for being weird and East Campus mocks West Campus for being normal. Good fun all around, and I really hope I expressed this clearly and wont be getting any angry emails from students about the way I portrayed them. (Also, I hope it goes without saying that these are generalizations that shouldnt be strictly applied to everyone.) So, theres my very short introduction to MIT housing. It is entertaining and witty, and contains almost no actual content. Be sure to visit the websites linked above, which can probably provide you with actual facts. Or at least quality video. In about 5 weeks, when I only have a week left before I need to leave for MIT, Ill probably start shopping for clothes and dorm supplies and all that. This advantage tempts Jekyll to pursue in the experiment, slowly turning him from a person with good intentions, to a person with bad intentions, even though this remains unknow n to those around him until towards the end of the novel. Stevenson believed that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦man is not truly one, but two: which we assume is one good side to a person, and one bad or evil side to a person. He expresses this belief through Jekyll, who we see the good and evil personalities of in the novel. Even though Jekyll became evil enough to create Hyde, we see that Hyde is a totally evil alter ego to Jekyll himself, who does nothing good throughout the novel. The point in which we first know that Hyde is a man with a huge lack of morals when he knocks a girl down in the street, then tramples over her and walks off. Quote: And the next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot. After a doctor examines the injured girl, he sees Hyde and immediately dislikes him. This explains that Hyde is  a very ruthless character who some people, like the doctor, dislike or even hate Hyde so much that they want to kill him. Unlike most people, who would feel bad about being disliked or hated by a large number of people, Hyde does not seem to care about being hated by the group of people who were present when he trampled over the girl earlier in the novel. He is even referred to as being much like Satan in the quote, very much unlike his creator, Dr. Jekyll. In the novel, Stevenson describes Hyde as being small, deformed and purely evil, and going back to Stevensons view that every human being is comprised of one good half and one evil half, we get the impression that Stevenson presents his views on the evil half of all human beings through Hyde, who is half the size of Jekyll because he is Jekylls evil half, evil being only one half of a person in Stevensons belief. Social Skills Improvement System Rating Scales This test was developed by Elliot, Husse Gresham, this social skill rating system was published in 1990 by the American Guidance services. Validity According to Gresham Elliot (2008a), SSIS Rating Scales include three useful validity scales that allow examiners to judge the veracity of ratters: an F scale that will be elevated when ratters describe students as having an unrealistic number of problems; a response pattern index that is elevated if ratters provide an unusual pattern of responses (e.g., provides the same response to most of the items or provides a highly variable number of responses); and a response consistency index that is elevated if ratters complete similar items in very different ways(,paragraph 3). The validity of the construct has obviously made major and effective improvements, by measuring exactly what it is intended to measure. Correlations of the scales with measuring similar behaviour were high, with measurements of non-similar behaviours not correlating, (Gresham Elliot, 2008b). He was for a time employed by Cesare Borgia as a senior military architect and general engineer. By 1503 he was in Florence advising on the project to divert the River Arno behind Pisa to help with the siege of the city which the Florentines were engaged in. He then produced plans for a canal to allow Florence access to the sea. The canal was never built nor was the River Arno diverted.

This important theme is highlighted right at the beginning of the play when it is clear that Gerald Croft’s parents don’t entirely approve of his choice to marry Sheila Birling: â€Å"I have an idea that your mother – while she doesn’t object to my girl – feels you might have done better for yourself socially† When Gerald’s parents are brought up in conversation, also at the beginning, we hear the probable excuse for their absence: â€Å"It’s a pity Sir George croft and Lady Croft can’t be with us, but they’re abroad and so it can’t be helped† The difference in class between the Crofts and the Birlings can even be observed in the way Gerald speaks compared to how Mr. Birling speaks. Gerald seems to speak in a more upper-class way than Birling. For instance Gerald says things like â€Å"Oh – I say† and â€Å"Hear, hear! † and his speech is more educated and precise than Birling’s, whose speech is more relaxed. For instance Birling says things like â€Å"y’know eh? † and throughout the play Birling abbreviates words such as â€Å"them† to â€Å"’em â€Å", subtly suggesting a less-educated and precise character. This non-extreme conflict of class observed in the opening sets the scene for the whole play and by being subtle it achieves effect, by gently introducing the key element of the plot ahead early on without overshadowing events to come. This sub-consciously familiarises the audience with the main theme making what’s to come more affective and powerful. When the inspector tells of the girl’s suicide he presents it in a blunt, direct manner. This obviously affects and shocks the characters but also it has profound importance in capturing the audience’s attention. â€Å"This afternoon a young woman drank some disinfectant, and died, after several hours of agony, tonight, in the Infirmary† As soon as the inspector states this intensely dramatic line – made more dramatic by the position of the commas that add pauses, resulting in emphasis – the whole mood changes from the happy, family party atmosphere to a curiously uncomfortable and somewhat concerning mood. We have had the background and now the drama begins, still relatively early in the play, which is important as the attention of the audience has been captured relatively early in the plot. From this point on, the audience is continually wondering what the outcome is going to be. The play becomes a thriller – another way of maintaining intense interest and a significant part of the play’s success. Aside from the ‘Class’ and ‘Thriller’ aspects of the play, we also have a theme of revelation. The family are continually learning about each other and emphasis is places on appearance and reality. We witness a transition of a happy family turning into a family full of secrets and lies, adding intense drama that will keep an audience interested.

Emerson and Whitmans Views of Self What is man anyhow? What am I? What are you? asks Whitman. Who we are, what our purpose is and what the meaning of life is are all mysteries that man has tried to solve from his earliest history. Whitman and Emerson explore these ideas in their works, Song of Myself and Self Reliance. Whitman, an American poet, and Emerson, an American philosopher, take different approaches in their search for self-discovery, yet within their solutions, many parallels can be found. Emersons message is one of non-conformity and individuality. He views every man as unique within, and feels society, exterior elements and tradition are mans downfall. He urges us to be a product of ourselves, to live in the†¦show more content†¦Emerson states that genius is to believe that what is true for you in your private heart, is true for all men#8230; so agrees Whitman, These are really the thoughts of all men in all ages and lands, they are not original with me. Also complimenting each other are their ideas of great men throughout history. Emerson says, No greater men are than ever were, a singular equality may be observed between the great men of the first and last years while Whitman proclaims Births have brought us richness and variety#8230;I do not call one greater and one smaller, That which fills its period and place is equal to any. However, while Emerson feels that what great men have in common is the courage to listen to their own individuality and to be the first to express an idea, Whitman sees all men as contributing greatness to one another. These scholars, in their quest for excellence both revert back to simplicity. In both works children, and child-like thought are exalted. Emerson is awes at the freedom of a child, seeing it as god-like independence. He says a child conforms to no one, but rather all conform to the child. Whitman speaks of the wonder of a child contemplating what grass is. Both view the simplicity found in nature as also divine and perfect.
